Project objectives
The project directly relates to EDTech Priority Vertical and several Research Priorities by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science.
Since the beginning of the war most educational institutions, such as universities and schools, in Ukraine had to move their classes into an online format. It is likely that even after the war there will be a need to conduct some classes online or in a hybrid mode.
Though online format is not new and was actively used during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to some
limited evidence, online delivery proved to be less engaging and more demanding, both for students and teachers.
The suggested project will aim to assess the effectiveness of interactive polling for revision purposes. There is some limited evidence that usage of interactive polling platforms substantially increases engagement of students and receives positive feedback from teachers, but no significant studies have been conducted in relation to student performance, in particular for revision purposes.
Project goals
Our study will involve using Vevox as an interactive polling tool throughout one semester at Odesa Polytechnic National University for a number of groups of students at undergraduate and, possibly, taught postgraduate levels from several modules and disciplines. In line with our project, each new session during these modules will include polling activities of around 20-30 minutes long to deal with three to five questions. Questions for polling will have to be designed in a particular manner so that:
a) They address issues discussed/covered (including in required reading materials) in a previous session; and b) Have some relevance to assessment topic(s), even if indirectly.
Tutors will discuss the results of polling to each question with their respective groups. Such discussion should necessarily include explanation regarding correct and incorrect answer(s)/option(s).
At the end of the project (but prior to the final assessment) we will distribute Likert Scale questionnaires to participant tutors and students, which will allow us to gather data and analyse the engagement and satisfaction levels as well as whether Vevox was useful for revision purposes. Once final assessment is over, we will compare student results with previous cohorts in respective modules which did not use Vevox.
